The Associated Press revealed Friday that the Globe had been calling for the editorial boards of other newspapers to release editorials on Aug. 16 in protest of the Trump administration’s “dirty war against the free press.”

Marjorie Pritchard, who currently serves as the deputy managing editor at the Boston Globe and supervises the paper’s editorial page, informed the AP that dozens of newspapers have already agreed to join the coordinated effort, including larger metropolitan daily newspapers and smaller publications.

The move follows mere days after the president escalated his attacks on the news media, to which he has labeled numerous times as the “enemy of the people.”

Trump, on Sunday, looking to undermine the press further, wrote in an early morning tweet that, “They can also cause War.”

“The Fake News hates me saying that they are the Enemy of the People only because they know it’s TRUE,” he wrote. “I am providing a great service by explaining this to the American People. They purposely cause great division & distrust. They can also cause War! They are very dangerous & sick!”

The president has battled with the media since his campaign trail, dismissing any negative coverage of himself as being “fake news.”

Trump has often faced scrutiny for his rhetoric towards the press; many believe his aggressive stance may have ultimately led to a mass shooting at the Capital Gazette where five journalists were gunned down by a shooter.
